DEAF WOMEN BREAKING BARRIERS 2020
Meet Miss Maria Okese
The current "Miss Deaf Nigeria"

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
My name is Maria okese, I am a photographer working with studio 24. An amazing photographic studio in Abuja. I am also the winner of Miss Deaf Nigeria Beauty Pageant 2019. I was born in Abua odual of Rivers State. I grew up in Port Harcourt, but now I am living in Abuja.

ARE YOU A PRE-LINGUAL OR POST-LINGUAL DEAF?
I am a post-lingual Deaf. Unfortunately, I lost my hearing ability at the age of three. I was stung by a bug, perhaps a bee and the place became really swollen. After that, I could not hear again. Eventually, I also lost the ability to speak. It was absolutely sad to lose my ability to hear and to speak, but I had to carry on since there is nothing I could do about it. Life has not really been easy from that point.

HOW HAD YOUR JOURNEY BEEN SO FAR? DID YOU STRUGGLE WITH YOUR IDENTITY OR ACCEPTANCE?
- IF YES, HOW DID YOU PULL THROUGH/OVERCOME IT.
My journey in life was very challenging. I lost my parents (my mother has died) when I was 3 years old. I have eight siblings, four brothers, and four sisters. I am the last born in my family. After the death of my parents, my lovely sister Ilami okese, who had a big family, took me in. Despite many challenges, my elder sister treated me like her own daughter. She sent me to a special school for the Deaf, where I earned my first school leaving certificate. Unfortunately, my uncle died, while he was helping me. My special sister had been very helpful to me. They are loving siblings. I had struggled with my identification especially when people don’t believe in me, there was a time I wanted to participate in pageantry with regular girls who were not deaf but they said my deafness was a challenge, they belittled me. This is one of the reasons why I was so glad when I heard about the pageant organized for the Most Beautiful Deaf Girl in Nigeria. I felt a sense of belonging; I saw it as a platform to showcase my skills and beauty to the world.
the challenge I had was lack of sponsors, many people don’t believe in me but some people still support my dreams. As an orphan it has not been an easy journey; I know how it feels not to have parents, so it was so hard for me to get support, but I’m still thankful that I have some good samaritans who support me; but still, it is quite challenging.
As early said I am a photographer. Photography has been one of the professional Work I had always wanted. I thought it was simple, just snap and print, but it had a lot of things to be done. I am happy I had derived such skills and I am now a photographer working with one of the famous Studio in Nigeria.

4. BEING DEAF IN A COUNTRY LIKE NIGERIA CAN BE A BIG STRUGGLE, BEING A DEAF WOMAN IS ANOTHER HURDLE BUT IN SPITE OF THIS, YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING GREAT STRIDES AND GRADUALLY CARVING A NICHE FOR YOURSELF, HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS?
I graduated from the Special Needs School in 2013 and was one of the beneficiaries who participated in the KIR Foundation's nine (9) months Vocational Training in 2013. I graduated with exceptional performance in Photography. My excellent performance earned me an award and a starter pack. The starter included a camera(Nikon D7000 Model Flash SB700 Speedlight), an HP laptop, and a photo printer.
Then I also join Susty Vibes for the same training which, in the end, gave me a new camera. Through this, I became a photographer.
In spite of this journey so far I had faced so many challenges and struggled in the quest for these dreams. Although with all kind of obstacles, I was able to pass through because I had strong people around me, who inspired me and had been my buttress, my lovely siblings, member of the MDNBP family, especially Dr. Tolulope oko-igaire, who came to my secondary school, while I was a student, to select talent female Deaf students that suit in to compete for Miss Deaf Nigeria Beaty Pageant, coordinator for MBDGN in the person of Mrs. Janet Fasakin....who is a Deaf, helped me move through many challenges in life,
In 2019, I won the first-ever Most Beautiful Deaf Girl in Nigeria Beauty Pageant (MBDGN) pageantry held at Standard Bearers School, Lekki, Lagos representing Rivers State.
I emerged winner among the 14 contestants across 13 states, including Lagos, Enugu, Abuja, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Ogun, Anambra, Edo, Benue, Rivers, Ogun, and Kwara and the President of Nigerian signs language interpreters, Uncle Timothy, who spare so much effort to see that I join studio 24, the famous photographic studio in Nigeria.
My boss at studio 24 is a very nice man, he’s like a father to me, who has been helping me to learn some skills, also upgrading my skills in photography. The staffs at studio 24 are very nice people, they are like family to me. They have always helped me and they include me in every work we are doing. They don’t see my deafness as a barrier.

5. WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS AND BIGGEST MOTIVATION?
The inspirations I had so far in this journey is being the winner of MBDGN and being able to work with one of the best studio in Nigeria. People who inspired me to work hard and prevail through this journey are those I mentioned above.

6. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 3-5 YEARS FROM NOW
In 3 to 5 years, I would see myself as a B.SC holder in photography and a manager of a studio and fashion business, a philanthropist, supporting orphans, giving them opportunities to achieve their dreams.

7. HAS BEING DEAF LIMITED YOU IN YOUR CAREER CHOICE/ ACHIEVEMENT?
Although being deaf had always been a challenge for me in achieving my dreams, but I am actually proud to be deaf because I see those challenges as an opportunity for me. The more challenges I face and overcome, the stronger I become, that’s why I don’t see my deafness as a factor that limits my career choice/achievements.

8. WHAT IS THAT ONE THING YOU WISH TO CHANGE ABOUT THE DEAF COMMUNITY?
Although the love from my parents has been a big thing I missed in my life, but I am happy to have grown to this point. I want to use this opportunity to help deaf children especially girls to have the love of their parents. Because some deaf girls out there are struggling and their parents don’t see or know what they are capable of doing for them in the future. So I will like to make awareness for Parents of Deaf children.

WHAT IS THAT ONE THING YOU LIKE ABOUT THE DEAF COMMUNITY?
The deaf community is one big family, whoever you meet as long as the person is Deaf, he or she will always welcome you as brother or sister. That’s what I like about the Deaf community.

10. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT?
My biggest achievement is being the winner of the MBDGN. And working with the best studio in Nigeria Studio 24

11. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG DEAF WOMEN OUT THERE?
My advice to women out there is to follow their hearts, be strong. Too much thinking is bad but if they can be focus on one goal in life they will be successful. That’s how I have gotten to this stage of my life. Because my dream and goal is to become a photographer and work with the best studio in our country.

12. HOW MANY SIGN LANGUAGE DO YOU UNDERSTAND AND USE (OPTIONAL).
I probably can understand three sign language, the first sign language is a pre-school sign language which is a home basic sign language like gesturing or trying to say something using its character. Then Nigerian Sign Language is the major language I am using, I am trying to learn American Sign Language. I know a little bit about it, it’s beautiful.

HAS KNOWING THE SIGN LANGUAGE CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS?
Of course, Sign Language has been my language, my culture, and the way I communicate with my counterparts. It had contributed massively to the achievement of my career.

STUDIO 24 has a partnership with Smartrezo, to promote in Nigeria and in Africa, a Global Digital Sovereignty not limited to personal or strategic data.

Smartrezo is a social network that wishes to take root in the territories. It is part of an "anti GAFAM" concept and denounces its economic model. As a corollary, it attaches particular importance to the absence of any tracking of the user apart from technical needs.
Thus, no third party site (apart from the localetv site, associated with the social network, also without tracers) is linked to Smartrezo, which is moreover one of the rare sites to make the user aware of the risks linked to the use of application buttons of other RS in its confidentiality policy. To be commended!
As you know, there are many websites on the Internet that collect a lot of our personal data. Although most Internet users are aware of this, the breadth and depth of the phenomenon is, on the other hand, perhaps not so obvious.

Achieving French and also European Digital Sovereignty against GAFAM and BATX must be the priority for all.

The Challenge: to achieve Global Digital Sovereignty not limited to personal or strategic data...
* Personal data
* Strategic data
* Internet browsing data
* Adapting e-commerce to the local in order to protect local businesses
* Stop putting tracking or traffic measurement tags on websites

Smartrezo is a local Market Place and virtuous social network
Succeed together in changing the habits of Internet users, who by staying on traditional American social networks are solicited by targeted advertisements that kill local businesses.
Knowing how to bring together all the French digital players on Smartrezo in order to offer their alternative solutions to the greatest number of people
Leave the "inter-industry" imposed by the algorithms of the GAFAM platforms
Stop doing everything on their own, because this division plays into the hands of the Internet giants.

When you are on your mobile phone, you don't necessarily want to waste too much time looking at endless T&Cs or consent windows.

Advertisers know this and exploit this weakness. This is how many sites that we don't even know exist collect our data and our behaviour on the web.
